Cold Email Review

Six outreach emails sent after the Runway AI Summit, each shown next to the speaker it went to. Click a speaker card to enlarge it.

The situation

We're building Minimized, a company that makes gearboxes for humanoid robots. The catch is that only about 80 companies would use our product, so we can't afford a low conversion rate. Every email counts.

My strategy so far has been to go to summits and meet people in person, so they're more likely to reply when I follow up. So far it hasn't been successful. The six emails below went to speakers from the Runway AI Summit.

Next up, we're going to the Long Horizon summit on October 20th, where I could meet up to 44 robotics founders and maybe get a warm intro. I also have roughly 38 companies listed in my spreadsheet that I have no route to a warm intro for.

~80companies that could buy from us

~38companies on my list with no warm intro

What I'd love your take on

  1. What would get more replies?
  2. Should I use other platforms, like LinkedIn or X?
  3. How and when should I follow up?
  4. How can I get warm intros to the companies on my list?

Hey Wen-Loong,

I was in the audience for your panel at the Runway AI Summit and really enjoyed hearing about putting robots to work in messy, real-world environments.

I also checked out your site afterward and loved your mentoring philosophy: "I build it, you break it, we fix it. Together, we iterate." I freaking love that.

At Minimized (https://minimized.com) we're building gearboxes for robot joints, and I know Noble likes to buy proven parts rather than reinvent them. I'd love to hear what's been hard about finding gearboxes that hold up for you, and maybe iterate on it together.

I'm in SF right now and happy to come down to Sunnyvale. Would you be up for a coffee?

All the best,
Gabe Catalfo

Hey Paril,

I was in the audience when you spoke about the future of robots and really enjoyed it. A robot that gives people time back at home is something I'd love to see.

At Minimized (https://minimized.com) we're building gearboxes for robot joints. Home robots seem like one of the hardest places for them, since they need to be compact, quiet, and reliable around kids/pets. I'd love to hear what's been tricky on the hardware side for you.

I'm in SF right now. Would you be up for a coffee?

All the best,

Hey Quan,

I was in the audience when you spoke and I'm still thinking about your guess that general-purpose robots could take around 50 years to solve. I also loved your point about fostering the ecosystem, since nobody gets there alone.

That's a big part of what we're doing at Minimized (https://minimized.com). We're building gearboxes for robot joints, and we'd like to be one small piece of that ecosystem. If robots have to prove themselves in real environments, the hardware has to hold up out there too.

I'd love to hear what's been hard on the hardware side for you. I'm in SF right now. Would you be up for a coffee?

All the best,
Gabe Catalfo

Hey Chetan,

I was in the audience for your panel and really enjoyed your point about prioritizing zero-shot capability in industrial robots!

It got me thinking about the hardware underneath. For a policy to carry over to new tasks, the joints have to behave the same way every time. We're building gearboxes for robot joints at Minimized (https://minimized.com), and we're New York based too, so it's great to see another robotics team doing great work close by.

Have gearboxes been a pain for your team at all? I'd love to hear.

All the best,

Hey Lee,

I was in the audience for your panel and can't stop thinking about that metal chip in the vise. I also loved hearing that your team likes doing updates and running AI offline. That's exactly how I feel!

I come from the software side too. I've been an app developer (https://gabecatalfo.com) and recently moved into robotics, so it was great hearing how a head of software thinks about robots on a real shop floor.

Now I'm working on gearboxes for robot joints at Minimized (https://minimized.com), also in New York, and I'm trying to learn what actually breaks or slows teams down. Have gearboxes been a pain for you at all?

All the best,

Hey Anastasis,

I was at the Runway AI Summit and just wanted to say thanks for hanging around to chat with everyone after the talks. That was a class act.

I also loved the horse story, the photographer with the cameras along the track proving the horse actually flies. Such a good way to explain what you're building.

It got me thinking about the robot side of it. Once a model gets motion right, the robot still has to pull it off, and a lot of that comes down to the joints. We're building gearboxes for robot joints at Minimized (https://minimized.com), here in New York too.

So I'm curious: has your robotics team run into headaches with gearboxes? Finding ones that fit, lead times, getting decent specs out of suppliers, anything like that?

Would honestly love to hear what's been hard, even if it's not gearboxes.

All the best,
Gabriel Catalfo
